When a fence has to carry weight, like a heavy entrance gate, a historic front yard or an estate drive, we build it in welded steel or wrought iron. Iron is stronger than aluminum and much harder to bend. A well-kept iron fence can outlast the house it surrounds: HomeGuide's national guide gives wrought iron a 50- to 100-year lifespan.

Scroll panels, arched sections and decorative posts work best for an entry walk, a front garden or the panel beside a gate. HomeGuide puts ornamental wrought iron at $65 to $85 per linear foot installed nationally, and custom-welded designs at $85 to $130.

Steel panels give you the iron look at a lower price and are what we use for most long runs. HomeGuide lists plain black wrought iron at $50 to $60 per linear foot and galvanized at $60 to $65.
If your home sits in Murfreesboro's East Main Street Historic Zone, a new fence needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the City's Historic Zoning Commission before you can apply for the building permit. The district's design guidelines, as quoted in the Commission's April 2026 staff report, say the preferred fencing is "formal wrought iron, wood, or brick," and that new fences should match nearby materials and not disrupt the visual harmony of the front yards. The City says work done without a certificate is a zoning violation subject to a $50 fine, and each day it continues counts as a separate offense. We'll help you put together the drawings and photos the Commission asks for.
HomeGuide's national installed ranges by height:
Gates are the other big line. HomeGuide prices a single-car wrought iron driveway gate with an automatic swing opener and keypad at $4,000 to $6,000 installed. For more on swing and slide gates, see driveway gates.
Rust starts wherever the finish is chipped. Iron needs a galvanized or powder-coated base, touch-ups where a mower or trimmer scuffs a picket, and a fresh coat every so often. HomeGuide's national price for repainting an iron fence is $5 to $12 per linear foot. Our fence painting and staining page covers that work. If you'd rather never think about rust, black aluminum fence is the lower-maintenance look-alike.
