Driveway Gates Murfreesboro TN - Swing & Slide Gates

A driveway gate is the heaviest moving thing on most properties, and the first thing a visitor touches. It has to swing or roll without dragging, close square, and keep doing that through years of wet winters and summer heat. Most of that comes down to decisions made before the gate is built: the style, the posts, and where the gate sits on the drive.

Swing Gate or Slide Gate?

Single and Double Swing Gates

Swing gates are the classic look and the simplest hardware. They need clear, fairly level ground across the whole arc they sweep. A drive that climbs toward the house can stop an inward-swinging gate halfway open. Double leaves split a wide opening into two lighter gates that sag less.

Slide (Rolling) Gates

A slide gate rolls sideways along the fence line, so it works on sloped drives and short setbacks where a swing gate can't open. It needs a clear run beside the opening at least as long as the gate. HomeGuide's chain link guide lists rolling gates for openings of 12 to 20 feet.

Gate Materials

HomeGuide's national installed prices for manual gates by material:

  • Chain link: $180 to $1,000
  • Vinyl: $200 to $1,100
  • Wood: $300 to $4,000
  • Aluminum: $400 to $4,500
  • Steel: $500 to $4,500
  • Wrought iron: $600 to $5,000

Overall, HomeGuide puts a manual driveway gate at $300 to $1,200 installed and an automatic one at $1,900 to $6,000. Width moves the price too. Its electric gate guide lists the gate alone, before an opener or installation, at $500 to $1,500 for 10 feet and $2,500 to $6,000 for 18 feet. For a formal entrance, see wrought iron and steel styles.

Posts, Placement and Planning Ahead

  • Posts sized to the gate. Gate posts carry the whole leaf hanging off one side. They're larger than fence posts and set deeper in concrete. HomeGuide notes standalone gate jobs often cost 30 to 50 percent more in labor than a gate added to a fence project, mostly because of that post work.
  • Set back from the road. In unincorporated Rutherford County, fences and gates have to stay out of the road right-of-way, and the ordinance bans anything that blocks drivers' sight lines at a driveway. We set the gate far enough back that a car can pull fully off the road while it opens.
  • Build it to automate later. If you might add an opener someday, the gate should be built for it now. Automatic vehicular gates are covered by ASTM F2200, and retrofitting a gate that wasn't built to it can mean rebuilding it. See automatic gate openers.
  • Call 811 first. Gate posts and any wiring trench need Tennessee 811 locates before digging.
