Pool Fence Murfreesboro TN - Code-Compliant Pool Barriers

A pool fence has one job that no other fence has: keeping a small child out of the water when nobody is watching. That's why it gets inspected, and why the details that don't matter on a backyard fence suddenly do: gap sizes, gate swing, latch height. Here is how pool barriers work in Murfreesboro and unincorporated Rutherford County, and how we build them to pass.

  • We walk your property line before we quote
  • Posts, panels, gates and hardware priced line by line
  • Residential, commercial and farm fencing
  • City permit or County affidavit handled up front

Permits Come First

Inside Murfreesboro City Limits

The City's pool permit application says that if the pool needs a new fence, the City issues the fence permit first, or together with the pool permit, never after. Every pool needs a barrier unless its walls stand 48 inches or more above grade all the way around. The City also notes that existing fencing may comply, but special gate hardware is required. Pools can't sit in an easement or a setback, or within 5 feet of the house, and in-ground pools need a surveyor-prepared plot plan.

Unincorporated Rutherford County

Outside the city, a pool barrier is the one fence the County affidavit doesn't cover: it gets a real inspection. The County Building Codes Department's barrier sheet is based on the 2024 ISPSC (the swimming pool and spa code).

The Barrier Details Inspectors Check

From Rutherford County's barrier requirements:

  • Height: at least 48 inches, measured on the side away from the pool. The height has to hold for 3 feet out from the barrier, so a planter or AC unit next to the fence can become a step.
  • Bottom gap: no more than 2 inches over grass or mulch, and no more than 4 inches over concrete.
  • Chain link: mesh openings of 1¾ inches or less. A standard 2-inch residential diamond is too big unless slats close it down.
  • Wood or vinyl with rails: if the horizontal rails are less than 45 inches apart, they go on the pool side, and gaps between vertical boards can't exceed 1¾ inches.
  • Iron or aluminum pickets: with horizontal rails 45 inches or more apart, pickets can be up to 4 inches apart.
  • Gates: pedestrian gates swing outward, away from the water, and must be self-closing and self-latching. If the latch release is lower than 54 inches, it has to sit on the inside of the gate, 3 or more inches down from the top, with no opening over ½ inch within 18 inches of it. On a double gate, one leaf has to be secured in place.
  • House walls: if a door or low window opens straight into the pool area, it needs a listed water-hazard entrance alarm, or the pool needs a listed safety cover.

Pool Fence Materials

  • Aluminum is our usual pick: open views, no rust near chlorine, and pickets spaced to code. HomeGuide puts aluminum pool fence at $30 to $45 per linear foot installed nationally. See aluminum fence.
  • Vinyl privacy, with the rails on the pool side. See vinyl fence.
  • Black chain link with small mesh or slats, the budget option. HomeGuide's range is $10 to $29 per linear foot. See chain link fence.
  • Wood, built with the same rail and gap rules.

HomeGuide's national average for a full pool fence runs $2,000 to $13,500 for a typical 200- to 300-foot run. Self-closing, self-latching magnetic gate hardware adds $200 to $800.
