Vinyl is the fence for people who never want to own a paintbrush. It doesn't rot, it doesn't need stain, and a garden hose takes care of most of the cleaning. HomeGuide's national guide gives it a 20- to 30-year life. The trade-off is the up-front price, so here's what you're paying for and where vinyl earns its keep in Murfreesboro yards.
Tongue-and-groove pickets locked between a top and bottom rail make a solid 6-foot wall with no gaps, now or later. HomeGuide prices a 6-foot vinyl privacy fence at $40 to $60 per linear foot installed nationally and an 8-foot fence at $60 to $85.
Semi-Private and Lattice-Top
A solid lower panel with lattice or spaced pickets across the top 12 inches or so. Neighbors still can't see in, but the fence looks lighter, and it suits a patio better than a flat wall.
Vinyl Shadowbox
Alternating vinyl boards look the same from both sides and let wind through, which matters on open lots in new subdivisions where nothing has grown up yet. HomeGuide's national range is $40 to $65 per linear foot installed.
Shorter vinyl picket and vinyl rail fences for front yards are covered on our split rail and picket fence page.
What Makes a Vinyl Fence Last
Not all PVC fence is the same. ASTM F964 covers the material, dimensions and weathering performance of rigid PVC fence profiles, and ASTM F1999 is the standard practice for installing vinyl fence systems, gates included. We work from both. In practice, that means:
Room to move. PVC grows and shrinks more than wood when temperatures swing, so rails need a little play in their post pockets. A fence built too tight in August can bow by January.
Steel in the gate posts. A long vinyl gate hung on a hollow post will sag. We add aluminum or steel stiffeners at gate posts and in wide gate frames.
Concrete at every post. Hollow posts are set in concrete over a gravel base. Rutherford County requires at least 2 feet of embedment in unincorporated areas, and taller fences get more.
Color and Cost
White costs the least. HomeGuide lists white vinyl material at $20 to $25 per linear foot, against $30 to $65 for black and $30 to $55 for wood-grain browns. A standard 4- to 6-foot vinyl walk gate adds $150 to $780 installed. If you're comparing vinyl with a wood privacy fence, the real question is how long you plan to stay. Wood costs less on day one, but it needs stain every year or two.
Vinyl Around a Pool
Vinyl privacy panels make a good pool barrier as long as the details are right. Rutherford County's pool barrier rules call for at least 48 inches measured on the outside, and when horizontal rails are less than 45 inches apart, they have to sit on the pool side so a child can't climb them. See pool fence and barrier gates before you pick a style.
