Split Rail Fence Murfreesboro TN - Picket & Yard Fences

Some fences are there to mark a line, not to hide anything. A split rail fence along a road frontage or a white picket fence around a front garden tells people where your yard starts. It keeps cars off the grass and frames the house, and you can still see over it.

Split Rail Fence

Two-rail and three-rail split rail sections meeting at a mortised post, Murfreesboro, TN

Two-Rail and Three-Rail

Rails slot into mortised posts with no nails, so a broken rail can be swapped without tearing the fence apart. HomeGuide's national installed prices are $15 to $20 per linear foot for two rails, $20 to $25 for three and $25 to $30 for four.

Split Rail With Wire Mesh

Welded wire stapled to the inside of the rails turns a split rail fence into a pet fence while keeping the open look. HomeGuide prices it at $35 to $40 per linear foot. For other ways to keep a dog in, see dog fence options.

Picket Fence

Wood Picket

A 3- to 5-foot picket fence suits cottage-style homes and older neighborhoods near downtown. HomeGuide lists wood picket fence at $20 to $40 per linear foot installed. We can space pickets for looks, or close them up so a small dog can't squeeze through.

Vinyl Picket

White vinyl picket keeps its look without repainting. HomeGuide's range is $30 to $45 per linear foot installed. Our vinyl fence page covers taller vinyl privacy styles.

Front Yard Rules You Should Know

In unincorporated Rutherford County, any fence inside the required front setback has to be transparent construction, and the County's own examples are split rail, picket and chain link. That's why these styles show up close to the road while solid privacy fences stay behind the house. The same ordinance prohibits fences that block drivers' sight lines at streets, alleys and driveways, so we keep corners near a driveway low and open. Inside city limits, a new front-yard fence still needs a City building permit, and in the East Main Street Historic Zone it needs Historic Zoning Commission approval first.

Split Rail on Acreage

Split rail is also a quick way to fence road frontage on a few acres. HomeGuide estimates $8,300 to $11,500 per acre. Tennessee law even counts a 4-foot post-and-rail fence as a "sufficient" fence for livestock (T.C.A. § 44-8-102). For horses, though, we'd usually steer you to four-board horse fence, which is taller, stronger and easier for a horse to see.
